Troubleshooting

Fixing the "Smartcard cannot be accessed due to other outstanding connections" error

  • If the application is not able to make use of the built-in RFID chip reader, check the c:\ProgramData\NEC\kiosk\logs folder and identify a set of files named like EIDAToolkit_<version>_<date>.log
  • Identify the one that has the latest date and open it using e.g. Notepad++.
  • Scroll to the end of the file
  • Check whether you can see an repeating error that includes this text: "Smartcard cannot be accessed due to other outstanding connections"
  • If this is the case, then the device driver is locked and you need to force the OS to reload it. Proceed like described below.

    • Using the above described guidelines, identify the "OMNIKEY 5122CL Dual" device in the Device Manager
      • Hint: If you followed the above guidelines correctly, it should be the only one smart card reader device enabled
    • Right click on it then select "Uninstall device"

      //

    • Confirm the device removal by pressing Uninstall in the following dialog box (NB - The OS will also force unloading its related device driver at this point)

      //

    • Notice that the selected device was removed.

    • Right click on any entry in the Device Manager and choose "Scan for hardware changes"

      //

    • Notice that a new device has been re-added under Smart Card Readers node. This is the "OMNIKEY 5122CL Dual" device (NB - The OS will also force loading its related device driver at this point).

      • The OS will remember the enabled/disabled state that the device had before uninstalling it
    • Confirm that you do not see new appearances of the error and that you can correctly use the device this time

Troubleshooting Multiple Smart Card Readers

Info

This documents the steps to connect and use an external smart/chip card reader connected via an USB cable to the Kiosk unit. These steps are required only when there is a conflict with the other smart card readers connected to the Kiosk.

If the smart card reader is not reading the card, then it might be the case that the Kiosk has other smart card readers enabled which are conflicting. To solve this problem, follow the steps mentioned below, exactly in this order.

  • Open the ‘Device Manager’ on the PC

    • Open the “Run” dialog box by pressing and holding the Windows key, then press the R key (“Run”).
    • In the dialog that opened up, type "devmgmt.msc", like in the image below.

      //

    • Click OK.

      Warning

      Depending on your account privileges and on Windows' UAC settings, you may be prompted to enter Admin credentials for this operation.

  • In the Device Manager application, find the "Smart Card Readers" node and expand it like shown below.

    //

  • If there is more than one listed, then do the following

    • Unplug the USB cable for the external chip card reader that you WANT to use for the Kiosk.
    • Notice that one device has been removed from the list

      //

    • Disable the remaining ones, as they are the devices that you DON'T WANT to use with Kiosk

    • Right click on the device node, then choose 'Disable Device'.

      //

      Warning

      Please be careful to not choose 'Uninstall Device' instead of 'Disable Device'. They may have similar effects for a while, but they're not the same thing. Uninstalling the device will only address the problem until the next OS restart, or until you use the 'Scan for hardware changes' option; at this moment, the devices will appear back in the list remembering the Enabled/Disabled state that they had at the moment when they were uninstalled.

      • Do this until you see all Smart Card Readers devices disabled like below.

        //

    • Plug-in the external chip card reader and it will reappear on the list.

      • Make sure it is enabled. It should have a tiny blue dot like in the image below.

        //

  • Now the external smart card reader should work.

  • Repeat this process each time when you notice that you have more than one enabled Smart Card Reader device.
